Flare Box

Steel, sheet acrylic, road flares, duct, hardware;  1998;  55” x 78” x 20"

Nineteen safety flares are arrayed inside a steel and plexiglass box.  When lit, each flare ignites its neighbor such that a flare is always lit for the duration of the business day.  The box is reloaded and lit again for the next day of exhibition.  The plexiglass is tinted and the smoke is vented out of the room to allow close and comfortable viewing.  A state of constant emergency is contained and rendered approachable.
